F1 AND ECCLESTONE
[BIZ: Namur, November 9] The Walloon government had hoped that there would be some change in the agreement, following Mr. Defourny’s bankruptcy, and now PM Elio Di Rupo has appealed to representatives of the municipalities of Spa, Stavelot, and Malmedy to actively support the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa Francorchamps.
The Walloon regional government has commissioned the Minister of Economics, Mr. Marcourt, to negotiate with Formula 1 chief Bernie Ecclestone about the future of F1 races in Francorchamps. Currently the government in Namur has a contract with Mr Ecclestone and has to pay EUR 10m annually, through 2010. The agreement was made two years ago between Mr. Ecclestone and the Liège manager, Mr. Defourny, who was recently declared bankrupt.
