Jo Ritzen, chairman of the board of the University of Maastricht and president, said: “As the best university in the Netherlands, we are working to create top facilities for our students and staff and the concept of a mobile campus fits in with our aspirations”. Vodafone and the University of Maastricht will in the coming months list projects on which they will be cooperating. One is a special application for students, in which university information is available via the mobile telephone. Mobilizing the functions of the University Library and supporting university applications for laptops are also part of the project. Parties will investigate the extent to which students and staff make use of mobile communications options, both in Maastricht and at home and abroad, wherever the students are. Vodafone Libertel NV is one of the biggest mobile telcos in the Netherlands and is part of the Vodafone Group, the world’s largest mobile telco for, with 165 million customers on five continents. The Vodafone Group has shares in mobile operators in 27 different countries and cooperates in networks in 14 countries.
Vodafone Netherlands and the University of Maastricht have started a cooperative project in which large private and non-profit employers in the region are going to combine forces. Both parties are convinced that cooperation in the area of mobile communication will be beneficial to the organizations and produce substantial added value.
